The cultural heartbeat of Ellerman House

At Ellerman House, wine, art and cuisine are part of daily life. Together, they bring depth, character and a distinctly South African perspective to the experience of staying here.

Our Cultural Pillars

Ellerman House has always been shaped by more than hospitality. Wine, art and cuisine are not separate experiences added to a stay; they are part of the character of the house itself.

A conversation might begin over a rare bottle in the Wine Gallery and continue through dinner. A walk to breakfast often becomes an encounter with works by some of South Africa's most important artists. Menus reflect the seasons, drawing on ingredients from local growers, producers and the coastline beyond the house.

Together, these elements create a richer understanding of South Africa. Not only through its landscapes, but through the people, stories, craftsmanship and traditions that continue to shape it today.

Wine

Wine has always been central to life at Ellerman House. Beneath the house, the Wine Gallery opens into one of the country's most significant private collections, bringing together iconic producers, rare vintages and the winemakers shaping South African wine today.

More than a cellar, it is a space designed for discovery. Guests are encouraged to explore at their own pace, guided by a team whose knowledge is generous, engaging and free from ceremony. Tastings often become conversations, revealing the people, regions and stories behind each bottle. Beyond the gallery, wine finds its way naturally into the rhythm of the day, whether over lunch on the terrace, at sunset overlooking the Atlantic or around the dinner table long into the evening.

Art

Pieces by established masters sit alongside contemporary voices, creating a collection that reflects both where South Africa has come from and where it continues to go. Yet nothing feels museum-like. The works exist within lounges, hallways, dining spaces and private rooms, becoming part of everyday life within the house.

Through private tours and conversations with the team, guests gain a deeper understanding of the artists, ideas and stories behind the collection, often discovering unexpected connections along the way.

Cuisine

Cuisine at Ellerman House begins with ingredients. Seasonal produce, fresh seafood and carefully sourced local products shape menus that feel grounded in the region while allowing room for creativity and refinement.

The approach is confident rather than complicated. Flavour takes precedence, supported by thoughtful technique and a clear respect for the quality of what arrives in the kitchen each day. The result is food that feels considered without ever becoming overly formal.

Meals take place across the house and throughout the day, from relaxed breakfasts overlooking the bay to long lunches, intimate dinners and evenings that unfold at their own pace. Together with the wine collection and setting of the house, dining becomes one of the most memorable parts of a stay.
