A Living Archive of South African Art Within the Home

The collection is a constant presence throughout the house, revealing itself in unexpected moments. More than a gallery, it offers a deeper connection to South Africa's creative history and cultural identity.

A journey through South African art: a living private collection.

The Ellerman House art collection is one of the most significant private collections of South African art, comprising more than 1,000 works that trace over two centuries of artistic and cultural development.

From early Cape paintings and the emergence of South African impressionism and modernism to important contemporary voices, the collection reflects a country continually redefining itself. Questions of identity, history and place emerge across generations of artists, creating a visual narrative that continues to evolve.

What makes the collection unique is the way it is experienced. Rather than being separated from daily life, the works are integrated throughout the house itself. They appear within the Edwardian residence, contemporary villas, dedicated gallery spaces and outdoor settings overlooking the Atlantic. Exploring Ellerman House becomes, in many ways, a journey through South African art.

How the Collection is Experienced

The collection is not a static exhibition to be viewed in silence, but a living presence that invites constant interaction. It is experienced through a series of intentional encounters across the house, where architecture, landscape and art converge to create a narrative.
The collection is integrated across Ellerman House, allowing guests to encounter works naturally as they move through the property.

Art Throughout the House

Works from the collection appear throughout Ellerman House, allowing guests to encounter them naturally as they move through the property. Art becomes part of the experience of living in the house, creating moments of discovery in lounges, corridors, suites and shared spaces.
These experiences offer context, storytelling and interpretation, revealing the history behind key works and the broader narrative of South African art.

Private Art Tours

Guests can explore the collection alongside the house art specialist through private guided tours. These conversations bring context to the works, revealing the artists, histories and ideas behind them while offering a deeper understanding of South African art and its ongoing evolution.

The Gallery

A dedicated gallery space within Ellerman House presents carefully selected works from the collection. Rotating exhibitions create opportunities to explore particular artists, themes and periods in greater depth, offering a quieter and more focused viewing experience.
The Wine Gallery celebrates the extraordinary diversity of South African wine.

The Wine Gallery

The Wine Gallery brings together architecture, design and wine within a striking sculptural space. Created with the same attention to detail found throughout the art collection, it reflects a shared appreciation for craftsmanship, storytelling and the experience of discovery.
Set within the gardens of Ellerman House, the Sculpture Garden presents contemporary works in dialogue with the natural landscape and the Atlantic Ocean.

The Scultpure Garden

Set within the grounds of Ellerman House, the Sculpture Garden places contemporary works in conversation with the surrounding landscape and ocean beyond. Light, weather and season continually shape the experience, ensuring that no two visits feel exactly the same.

A Collection You Live With

Unlike a traditional gallery, the collection is not experienced in a single visit. It becomes part of everyday life as you gradually make your way through passing moments, lingering observations and unexpected discoveries that deepen over the course of a stay.

GIVING BACK TROUGH ART - ART ANGELS

Each year, Ellerman House hosts ArtAngels, an annual charity auction bringing together leading contemporary South African artists in support of education initiatives across the country. The initiative extends the philosophy of the collection beyond the house, using art as a means of cultural expression and meaningful social impact. Artists donate works, creating a unique link between creative practice and philanthropy.

ArtAngels has become an important moment in the South African art calendar, uniting collectors, artists and supporters around a shared commitment to education.

To date, more than R26 million has been raised in support of Click Learning and initiatives that improve access to quality education across South Africa.

Art with us is not something you visit. It is something you live alongside, discovering new perspectives with every encounter.

Where the Soul of Creativity Meets a Refined Coastal Sanctuary

These three pillars exist in quiet balance, each carrying a distinct depth and character. Together, they shape a way of living rooted in creativity and craft, fostering a deeply felt sense of culture that resonates through every room and hallway.

Wine

Wine is woven naturally into the rhythm of the house. A glass before dinner, a bottle shared over lunch or a conversation that begins in the cellar and continues long into the evening. It offers an ongoing introduction to the people and places shaping South African wine today.

Cuisine

Cuisine is guided by what is in season, what is available locally and what tastes best at that moment. The approach is thoughtful rather than complicated, allowing exceptional ingredients and careful cooking to create meals that feel both memorable and genuinely satisfying.
